Is it 1928 again? / Deja Vu der 1920er Jahre?

"The Nation" writes about the coming crash of the US economy these days. And the equivalent to the 1930ies big depression are uncanny. Steadily lowered taxes for high income persons lead to a wealth distribution just like in 1928 with the top 0.001% earning about 1000 times as much as 90% of the whole US population. And while this may seem like a US trend, comparing it to other nations shows, that while this distribution is muchhigher in the US than elsewhere, other nations like Germany cannot really claim to have it much better. Brace for impact! But beware of what followed after that kind of situation last time!

"The Nation" schreibt gerade etwas über den kommenden Zusammenbruch der US Wirtschaft. Und wie man schon seit einiger Zeit weiss, trifft es der Vergleich sehr gut. Ständig sinkende Steuern für die oberen Einkommen führten zu einer Ungleichheit im Reichtum, der den oberen 0.001% der US Bevölkerung fast 1000 mal so viel Vermögen beschert wie 90% der restlichen Bevölkerung. Das letzte mal was das 1928 der Fall und was danach kam wissen manche vielleicht noch. Und in anderen Nationen schaut es auch nicht ganz so rosig aus, in Deutschland gibt es den gleichen Trend.

Hungary abolishes democracy / Ungarn schafft Demokratie ab

So much for Hungary - Same days ago they took their peoples pensions, now they are about to cripple their consitutional court, write a new constitution and instate state control over the media! And to top this off, this land will be sending the president of the EU for 2011!  There is not much more to say about this.

Vor ein paar Tagen gabe es ja schon die Meldung, daß Ungarn die Pensionen einkassiert hat, jetzt wird noch das Verfassungsgericht entmachtet, die Medien gleichgeschaltet und die Regierungspartei kann mit einer 2/3 Mehrheit noch so einiges mehr anstellen - im Moment arbeiten sie gerade an einer komplett neuen Verfassung! Vorher hatte das Land ja schon ein kleines Problem mit einem Bergwerk. Und um dem noch eine Krone aufzusetzen, bekommt EU ab Januar 2011 die EU Präsidentschaft!  Dazu fällt mir fast nichts mehr ein

You are what you watch / Du bist was du siehst

"You are what you eat", my mother told me always, encouraging me to eat healthy food at school. In the media age, this can now be translated to "you are what you watch". According to a survey recently conducted, a massive amount of viewers of FOX News do believe that among scientists there is a consensus that global warming does not exist. This is contrary to all reality. The numbers are much lower for other channels such as CNN or PBS.

"Du bist was du isst" sagen Eltern ihren Kindern wenn sie ihnen gesundes Essen nahelegen wollen. Im Zeitalter von telemedialen Massenmedien könnte man auch sagen "Du bist was du siehst". Nach einer Umfrage in den USA glauben 60% der Zuschauer des dortigen Senders FOX News, daß sich die Wissenschaftler der Welt einig sind, daß es keine Klimaerwärmung gibt. Diese Misinformation is deutlich weniger ausgeprägt wenn man sich Zuschauer anderer Nachrichtensender ansieht. (FOX ist ein US Fernsehsender der unter dem Ruf steht die Propagandamaschine von Konzernen zu sein)

Nanoparticles end up in muscle tissue / verschluckte Nanoteilchen verteilen sich im ganzen Körper

Does anyone else think that nanotechnology is the radioactivity of the 21st century? It has so many applications and almost no harm can be done - until one finds out that it does...
After copper nanoparticles have been used in industry for years now, someone now bothered to check what happens if some organisms like erathworms dig through soil that has them in it. It turns out, they survive for the 28 days tested (unless the copper concentrations were really high) but end up with nanoparticles not only in the gut tissue but also in the muscles. So basically everywhere in the animals that ingested the particles. Nanotechnology has such a great potential. What could possibly go wrong!

Jetzt geht es also so langsam richtig los mit den Auswikrungen der Nanotechnologie. Ich denke ja daß im Moment mit Nanotech ungefähr so blauäugig umgegangen wird wie damals mit Radioaktivität und daß es am Ende mehr als nur ein blaues Auge als Ergebnis geben wird. Also in einer neuen Studie hat man nachdem Kupfernanoteilchen ja nun schon lang überall verwendet werden sich dann doch mal bemüht herauszufinden was passiert wenn man Regenwürmer in Erde setzt in der diese Partikel vorhanden sind. Es stellt sich heraus - die werden nicht nur gefressen und bleiben in der Darmwand hängen, nein sie dringen auch ins Muskelgewebe ein und sind am Ende eigentlich überall im ganzen Wurm. Die Würmer haben es für die 28 Tage wohl überlebt wenn nicht zu viel Kupfer da war, aber mal ehrlich - Kupfer im gesamten Gewebe - das kann nicht gut sein. Aber die Möglichkeiten! Was kann schon schiefgehen!

Humans consume 25% of all plants / Menschen konsumieren 25% aller Pflanzen

Humans consume currently at least 25% of all newly produced land plants on Earth (probably more in the oceans if one looks ate the declining fish populations). This includes of course remote areas and mountains, meaning the ratio is much higher in industrialized regions. The interesting tidbit here is, that this has increased from 20% since 1995, not only due to population growth, but mostly due to increased consumption by each person on average. The conclusion is obvious - it is, as with energy - not really a matter of population growth when it comes to the problems that are caused, but it is simply a matter of consumption. Even if population increase could be stopped somehow, an increased consumption in energy and plants (including wood, cotton, biofuels, cattle feed) continues to pose a great problem. If all the current population of the world would consume as much plant material as the industrial nations, the percentage is estimated to rise to over 50%, which translates in a world that has to be more productive and extremly precisely and rigorously managed. Not much room for Nature there. No way that this will work out.


Derzeit verbraucht die Spezies Mensch 25% aller nachwachsender Pflanzenrohstoffe an Land weltweit (in den Weltmeeren sieht es sicherlich nicht besser aus, wenn man bedenkt daß fast alle größeren Fische irgendwann einmal in den Netzen landen). Die Zahl schliesst natürlich entlegene Gebiete und Berge und Regenwälder mit ein, das heisst in den "genutzten Landschaften" ist der Anteil sicher noch deutlich höher. Das interessante Detail in dem Artikel ist, daß der Anteil von 20% im Jahre 1995 gestiegen ist und daß man wohl endlich erkannt hat, daß Bevölkerungswachstum alleine nicht alles ist. Genau wie beim Energieverbraucht gibt es auch wenn es keine Bevölkerungsexplosion mehr gäbe noch einen weiteren Anstieg im Verbauch. Es wird geschätzt, daß wenn alle Menschen den Verbrauch der Industrienationen annehmen, mindestens 50% aller Pflanzen zum menschlichen Konsum dienen müssten. Das wäre nur möglich wenn entgegen aller Trends (Bodenerosion, Nährstoffverarmung, Wasserknappheit, Klimawandel) die Produktion pro Fläche erhöht werden kann und gleichzeitig der gesamte Planet vorsichtig und streng gesteuert wird um die Produktionsleitung aufrechtzuerhalten. Der Planet als Produktionsmaschine - da bleibt nicht mehr viel Platz für Wildnis (mal abgesehen davon daß die Bevölkerung aktuell noch weiter wächst). Ne Ne das wird so aber nichts...

society has to become like a fish school / Fischschwarm als Modell für die Gesellschaft

A beginners guide to climate change (engl.) - a talk by David Wasdell on runaway climate change. You will get scared by it and it looks at first as if it is heading to James Lovelocks scnenario of unstoppable catastrophe. But his definitions of thresholds and tipping points somehow (I am glad if someone can explain it to me) is different than expected. He says the planet is beyond the tipping point of runaway global warming, but also concludes, that simply by reucing greenhouse gas emissions to zero we can halt the process. So somehow continued emissions seem to be part of his tipping point model.
In any case, his solution is rather old - once more he argues for political and economic forces that have to act rapidly to tax fossil fuels and subsidize renewable energy. An interesting twist on that is though, that in the end he admits, that he does not see much hope in the current political and economic systems in acting that way. He compares them to a supertanker on a wrong course, unable to stop or change course in time. He thus argues for a differnt way of organizing and compares this to a swarm of fish where each free individual acts fast and the whole system can act as fast as the individuals. This is one of the nicest descriptions of a basically anarchistic or absolutely democratic society I have come across for a long time.


Ein ausführlicher Vortrag zur Klimakatastrophe (engl.) - Die ersten 80% davon stimmen einen recht bedenklich. Vor allem die selbstverstärkenden Prozesse die am Werk sind (Methanhydrate die auftauen, Permafrost der auftaut,...). Man bekommt den Eindruck, James Lovelock hatte Recht wenn er sagt, daß alles zu spät ist. Und Lovelock kommt im Vortrag auch mal kurz vor. David Wasdell ist aber der Überzeugung, daß noch Möglichkeiten offen sind. Es ist aus dem Vortrag nicht ganz zu ersehen, wie er es vereinbart, daß er sagt, wir sind "jenseits der Schwelle zu einer selbstverstärkenden globalen Erwärmung", er aber der Meinung ist, daß eine Reduktion der CO2-Emissionen auf Null ausreicht um über die Schwelle zurückzutreten. Die Vermutung liegt Nahe, daß es ein rhetorisches Mittel ist, die Schwelle derart darzustellen und daß die Schwelle nur dann da ist, wenn man CO2-Emissionen mit einrechnet.
Interessant wird es gegen Ende. Er versucht das Ganze zwar wieder mit wirtschaftlich-politischen Mitteln aufzulösen (Strafsteuern auf fossile Brennstoffe, Subventionen für Solar- und Windkraft), geht aber weiter indem er sagt, daß die derzeitigen politisch-wirtschaftlichen Systeme dafür zu schwerfällig sind. Statt einer Regierung und Wirtschaft die an Supertanker erinnert (schwer zu bremsen oder zu lenken), schlägt es eine Form der Organisation vor die er mit einem Fisch-Schwarm vergleicht in dem jeder individuelle Fisch und damit das System als ganzes schnell reagieren kann. Das ist die netteste und hübscheste Art Anarchismus bzw absolute Basisdemokratie zu beschreiben die ich seit langem gehört habe!

scientific papers on climate for free / umsonst Publikationen zum Klima lesem

The weekly Radio Podcast from EcoShock.org provides the public with a number of scientific papers on climate change along with the latest broadcast. The papers were publicly available for a limited time on the website of the Royal Society but now require payment. The issue is called 'Four degrees and beyond: the potential for a global temperature increase of four degrees and its implications'. Along with these document, an interview with David Wasdell in the same radio show leads to the conclusion that climate is heading for disaster and there is no real hope that politics and economics will manage to avert this in time. If you want to look at some talks on climate science there are recordings of last years conference "4 degrees and beyond". Easier to understand is the summary of much of this information David Wasdell gives in his video-presentation called "Beyond the Tipping Point". The conclusion is, that previous models do not take into account all feedbacks that make climate change worse (as they are not easily quantifyable) and that these models assume political action to prevent drastic increases in emissions. Both assumptions lead to a gross underestimation of climate change to the point that a catastrophic 4°C global warming is no longer the upper limit of prediction for the future of this world but becomes the most likely outcome

Das Blog von Radio EcoShock veröffentlicht ("im Geiste von WikiLeaks") kostenlos den Inhalt eines wissenschaftlichen Magazins für das man ansonsten eine kostenpflichtige Anmeldung braucht. Das Magazin ist eine Sonderausgabe der Royal Society und heisst 'Four degrees and beyond: the potential for a global temperature increase of four degrees and its implications'. Thema ist die drohende Klimakatastrophe und deren Implikationen. Passend zum Thema werden noch wissenschaftliche Präsentationen und Filme verlinkt. Was dabei herauskommt ist, daß die derzeitigen Klimamodelle offenbar eine Anzahl von bekannten Verstärkungsmechanismen nicht berücksichtigen, da nicht genug über sie bekannt ist um eine Berechnung durchzuführen. Außerdem gingen bisherige Modelle immer davon aus, daß die Politik und Wirtschaft besonnen handeln und die Emissionen nicht zu hoch anwachsen lassen. Beides ist wohl ein Fehler gewesen, derzeitige Klimamessungen bewegen sich am oberen Limit der Modellrechnungen. Was bisher als maximale Erwärmung modelliert wurde könnte in Zukunft eher der minimalwert werden, wenn man die Realität mit einbezieht. Dann sind katastrophale 4°C Erwärmung kein Extremszenario mehr sondern die Zukunft auf die die Welt zusteuert. (alle Beiträge in Englisch)

Is Hungary failing / Erwischt es Ungarn als nächstes?

It does not look good in Hungary - seems like they are enough in debt to sack part of their pension plans. The right-wing state nationalized 10 billion € worth of pensions that have been saved since 1998 to pay for debt and tax reduction for companies.

Ungarn hat es wohl schon nötig, 10 Milliarden Euro an angesparten Renten seiner Bürger zu verstaatlichen um den Staatshaushalt auszugleichen und Schulden "abzuzahlen". Wenn die weg sind, was ist dann nächstes Jahr dran? Na wenn das mal auf Dauer gut geht! (via fefe)

earthquakes threaten US nuclear plants / Erdbeben und die Kernkraft

Oh great! After some decades of nuclear power, the US starts now to assess the risks of earthquakes in the areas they built their plants in and plans on retrofitting some of them. So - they built some of the most dangerous technology on the planet in places that have not been properly assessed for seismic activity? What a giant powder keg!

Großartig - Die US überlegen jetzt nach ein paar Jahrzehnten fleissiger Kernkraftnutzung mal, ob sie nicht die Gegenden wo sie die Kraftwerke hinbauen nach seismischer Aktivität, also Erdbeben untersuchen sollten. Wenn dabei was rauskommt müsste man vielleicht einige Kraftwerke umrüsten, aber bloß nicht zu viele, sonst kostet das ja was. Aber man kann ja auch nicht an alles denken wenn man Kraftwerke baut, oder? Kann jemand "Pulverfass" sagen?

In other words the rap(e)-i-scan machine does not even manage to detect a 300g explosive. So who can doubt now that this is all about "perceived security" and not about really protecting planes from terrorists.

Dieses Bild ist ja in den letzten Tagen öfters aufgetaucht. Jetzt gibt es dazu noch sehr erheiternde Nachrichten aus einer Studie: Wenn man Plastiksprengstoff schön zu einem Pfannkuchen presst und den sich auf den Bierbauch klebt merkt es der Scanner nicht. 300g Sprengstoff sind dann kein Problem mehr für den ambitionierten Flugzeugsprenger. Hat noch jemand Zweifel daran, daß die ganze Rap(e)-i-Scan Sache einfach nur "gefühlte Sicherheit" bringen soll und sonst gar nichts?

Fun with Amazon / Spaß mit Amazon

This is over a year old, but it is so absurd that I need to put it in here: Amazon has locked all the Amazon Kindle users out of their legally purchased copy of "1984" and "Animal Farm". Of all the books they could lock or delete or censor they chose George Orwell. Who needs cinema if you can have real life satire.
Oh and this week, they topped this off by first locking the hosting servers for Wikileaks, just to sell the documents on that pages as a Kindle e-book later!

Die Meldung ist zwar schon über ein Jahr alt, aber die ist so großartig absurd, daß es das wert ist. Amazon sperrt den Käufern der Kindle Versionen von "1984" und "Animal Farm" die Leseberechtigung. Von allen Büchern die sie zensieren zurückziehen könnten haben sie sich ausgerechnet George Orwells Werke ausgesucht? Das ist doch Realsatire! Und dann setzen sie diese Woche noch einen drauf und sperren zuerst das Webhosting von Wikileaks nur um ein paar Tage später die Dokumente als ebook für den Kindle zu verkaufen!

Climate change is coming / Der Klimakollaps kommt

One of the world's foremost experts on climate change is warning that if humans don't moderate their use of fossil fuels, there is a real possibility that we will face the environmental, societal and economic consequences of climate change faster than we can adapt to them.
Lonnie Thompson, distinguished university professor in the School of Earth Sciences at Ohio State [:]
"...the longer we delay, the more unpleasant the adaptations and the greater the suffering will be."
[...] most societies around the world, including the United States and the other largest emitters of greenhouse gases, have done little more than talk about the importance of mitigation," he says.He says that there are currently no technological quick fixes for global warming.
"Our best hope," he says, "is to change our behavior in ways that significantly slow the rate of global warming, [...]" (via Sciencedirect)

 I don't really understand what he calls for, as clearly "changing our behaviour" is what he demands, but at the same time he says that "societies have done little more than talk" (and that is despite scientists in the past decades have repeatedly warned that "the time to act is now"). That is just what I wrote before - people are trying hard to ignore the situation despite better knowledge. So how can it happen that people "change behaviour" if individuals and societies do not want to change? How is a call for immediate change and action now any different in its efficiency than the ones before?
Maybe it is like Dr Tim Garrett says, the only way this can happen is by a global collapse in economy within a short period of time (via Ecoshock)


Die Wissenschaftler sind sich einig: die Klimakatastrophe kommt - und rufen wieder einmal dazu auf, daß "wenn wir jetzt entschlossen handeln wir das Schlimmste vermeiden können". (Das kommt allen sicher bekannt vor, denn das ist die Forderung die es schon vor 10, 20, 30, 40 und 50 Jahren gegeben hat - was passiert wenn man nicht danach handelt sieht man ja jetzt). Bei manchen Wissenschaftlern wie Lonnie Thompson schleicht sich aber langsam eine gute Portion Frustration mit ein und er erkennt, daß trotz derartiger Warnungen, "Gesellschaften" keine Anzeichen zeigen, eine Veränderung ernsthaft durchzusetzen. Was also tun? Klar - man schreibt, daß man "jetzt entschlossen handeln muss, um...." - Hahaha - großartiger Zirkelschluss!.
Vielleicht hat doch Atmosphärenforscher Dr Tim Garrett recht - der einzige Weg die Klimakatastrophe rechtzeitig aufzuhalten ist ein möglichst baldiger Kollaps der Weltwirtschaft. (via Ecoshock)

A University of Alberta researcher Imre Szeman says people generally do not act on information about the effects fossil fuel-based products are having on the environment

The cyberwar is on / Der Kyberkrieg beginnt

After the war on drugs, battle against poverty, combatting crime, fighting hunger, now the war on cyberterrorism is on - The US wants its "cyberwarriors" to program a computer virus to delete Wikileaks in order to prevent an attack with a "information age weapon of mass destruction". A diseased mind that is only filled with thoughts of war and battle cannot conceive any other language anymore, it seems.

Nach dem Krieg gegen Drogen, den Kämpfen gegen die Armmut, dem Streben danach den Hunger und die Armmut zu besiegen, bricht jetzt wohl der Kampf gegen den Kyberterrorismus aus - die US wollen gerne daß ihre Kyberkrieger einen Virus programmieren der Wikileaks löscht um damit eine "Nuklearexplosion der Informationen" zu verhindern. Großartiger Unfug! Jemand der immer nur an Krieg denkt kann wohl keine andere Sprache mehr sprechen. (Mal abgesehen davon daß ich es sehen will wie die einen Virus bauen wollen der die inzwischen über 1200 Mirrorsites von Wikileaks löscht und dann noch irgendwie an die Backups ran geht)

Farmville is like smoking / Farmville ist wie rauchen

nice catch - so to rephrase that: People do not play Farmville because it is so much fun to play, but because they are worried about what happens to their virtual farm if they are offline for a while. So it is like smoking cigarettes. You get a little fun while doing it, but mostly you continue doing it because you get anxious and all hyped up if you do not do it. Seems like the online gaming industry has learned something from other addictions.

Also auf deutsch: Leute spielen "Farmville" nicht etwa weil es Spass macht es zu spielen, sondern weil man Angst hat was im Spiel passiert wenn man gerade nicht online ist. Irgendwie wie Zigaretten rauchen, oder? Da hat jemand gut aufgepasst wie Suchtverhalten funktioniert! Großartiges Geschäftsmodell!

"green" fracking for oil? / Fracking nach Öl ist "öko"?

It seems, engineers have developed a kind of "fracking" for oil (if you do not know what "fracking" is, watch the movie "Gasland"). Pumping CO2 mixed with some chemicals underground to extract even more of the oil that is not accessible otherwise? Oh and of course it is all green - despite the fact that mining more oil is said to have some minor influences on the climate. (via ScienceDaily). That can't possibly go wrong!

Oh Mann - es scheint sie haben so eine Art "fracking" für Öl erfunden (wer nicht weiß was "fracking" ist, sollte mal den Film "Gasland" ansehen):  Alles total grün und toll für die Umwelt natürlich, weil man so leichter an das restliche Öl kommt und nicht so viel baggern muss! Naja, man muss dabei nur mal eben ignorieren, dass der Verbrennung von Erdöl von einigen wenigen Spinnern nachgesagt wird, dass es einen Einfluss auf dir Klimaerwärmung hat. Das kann gar nicht schiefgehen!

A culture of insanity

Wieder andere sagen, daß dies bereits passiert ist.
