Who could have known that? Dispersing antibiotic particles all over the world actually causes bacteria to die! So this is the story of DDT Nanoparticles. It was a wonderful chemical technology that was harmless to humans and would bring a better life to everyone by poisoning unwanted life. It was only years after the large scale introduction, that someone bothered to look at how other life was affected by it and the picture emerging then was dire.... - Oh and of course these particles destroy exactly those nice little bugs that are the source of nitrogen for plants. But chemistry to the rescure - we can just dump more nitrogen fertilizer on them, right?

Nein wer hätte auch darauf kommen können, daß wenn man antibakterielle Silber-Nanopartikel überall verbreitet tatsächlich Bakterien absterben. Darauf kann man ja nicht kommen, oder? Das ist wie damals bei DDT - super Chemie - tötet alles was wir nicht wollen aber uns nicht. Erst nach Jahren der Anwendung hat dann jemand sich mal die Mühe gemacht nachzuschauen ob das auch stimmt und jetzt ist DDT verboten. Aber der Lerneffekt war wieder mal null - Super Nanopartikel - töten alle Bakterien die wir nicht wollen, uns aber nicht. Erst nach Jahren der Anwendung hat sich jetzt jemand mal die Mühe gemacht nachzuschauen ob das auch stimmt.... und was kommt raus? Die Partikel zerstören auch noch gerade diejenigen Bakterien, auf die die Pflanzen angewiesen sind um Stickstoff selbst zu binden. Aber wer braucht das schon - kann man ja Kunstdünger draufkippen....

Does anyone else think that nanotechnology is the radioactivity of the 21st century? It has so many applications and almost no harm can be done - until one finds out that it does...
After copper nanoparticles have been used in industry for years now, someone now bothered to check what happens if some organisms like erathworms dig through soil that has them in it. It turns out, they survive for the 28 days tested (unless the copper concentrations were really high) but end up with nanoparticles not only in the gut tissue but also in the muscles. So basically everywhere in the animals that ingested the particles. Nanotechnology has such a great potential. What could possibly go wrong!

Jetzt geht es also so langsam richtig los mit den Auswikrungen der Nanotechnologie. Ich denke ja daß im Moment mit Nanotech ungefähr so blauäugig umgegangen wird wie damals mit Radioaktivität und daß es am Ende mehr als nur ein blaues Auge als Ergebnis geben wird. Also in einer neuen Studie hat man nachdem Kupfernanoteilchen ja nun schon lang überall verwendet werden sich dann doch mal bemüht herauszufinden was passiert wenn man Regenwürmer in Erde setzt in der diese Partikel vorhanden sind. Es stellt sich heraus - die werden nicht nur gefressen und bleiben in der Darmwand hängen, nein sie dringen auch ins Muskelgewebe ein und sind am Ende eigentlich überall im ganzen Wurm. Die Würmer haben es für die 28 Tage wohl überlebt wenn nicht zu viel Kupfer da war, aber mal ehrlich - Kupfer im gesamten Gewebe - das kann nicht gut sein. Aber die Möglichkeiten! Was kann schon schiefgehen!
